The topic of this article is 'possibility': the area of modality that has to do with probability judgements in relation to the occurrence of events. It is argued that an element of 'discourse meaning', related to the textual component, is realized by modal verbs of 'prediction', in addition to a component of probability meaning related to the ideational component.
