Annotation

The authors approach the notion of passivization from the perspective of applicative grammar. This solves a number of problems which arise by looking at the phenomenon from the perspective of autonomous syntax. The authors claim that passivization may be explained by a hypothesis which assigns to passive constructions a specific meaning that distinguishes them from active constructions. This meaning is characterized by means of the notions of 'converse predicate' and 'unspecified term'.
