A study of cognitive semantics, focussing on idiomatic metaphorical expressions in French, where terms describing the instrument or result of a mental or verbal action are conventionally collocated with descriptors of sensorial characteristics (e.g. 'pensées amères'). The question is raised whether they are arbitrary or whether they reflect a conceptual organization of mental and verbal activities.
