In examining the question expressed in the title, E. distinguishes educational from teacher-learner discourse, the former being an institutional transformation of the latter. Further questions are asked regarding the influence of institutional conditions on the form of individual linguistic actions, and the relationship between pedagogical demands, institutional requirements, and the reality of school discourse. The analysis is based on audiovisual recordings of actual classroom situations.
