Erbaugh, Mary S. 1987. A uniform pause and error strategy for native and non-native speakers. In Tomlin, Russell S., ed. Coherence and grounding in discourse. Outcome of a symposium, Eugene, Oregon, June 1984. John Benjamins. pp. 109–130.

Annotation

Data from an experiment concerning narrative description (of a cartoon without dialogue) are analyzed with respect to pause and error behavior of native vs non-native English speakers. The results point towards common cognitive processing strategies in all speakers, in which the relative importance of the event being described is critical in prompting speakers to pause, err, or correct themselves, while language background has little influence.
