Annotation

F. examines the notion of illocution in conversations with three or more participants. In such situations the give-and-take process of speech acts is frequently considerably more complicated than with two interactants only. Since what each speaker says is heard by more than one addressee, the intended illocutionary force may be different with regard to each of the hearers, i.e. one utterance may have different illocutions at the same time. This phenomenon is labeled 'divided illocution'.
