Annotation

A critical examination of arguments proposed in favor of either a structural view of children's single-word utterances (i.e. the utterances are seen as implicit expressions of syntactic or semantic structural relations), or a functional view of them (i.e. the utterances are seen as a single lexical item used for a particular communicative function). On the basis of empirical evidence it is concluded that only the functional view is tenable.
