The author argues for the integration of situated analysis and formal analysis to obtain more complete accounts of discourse practices and processes. Case in point is the multitude of links between the practice of talking in relation to the action of 'initiating repair'. It is shown that this action can be produced by a practice that is not ordinarily associated with it.
