Annotation

Usage and meaning of causal and contrastive connectives are examined. A fundamental, pragmatic distinction between causal and contrastive connectives is the relationship between underlying level (or Basic Scheme) and surface utterance. It is argued that this relationship expresses the coherence relation, since connectives represent the lexico-grammatical aspect of coherence relations.
