Annotation

The purpose of this article is to clarify the distinction between semantic and pragmatic Sources of Coherence. A paraphrasing experiment indicates that context type only affects interpretation of ambiguous coherence relations, while a corpus study shows that semantic relations prevail in informative texts, pragmatic relations in expressive and persuasive texts.
