Annotation

The Dutch verbs DOEN ('do') and LATEN ('let') are said to assign direct and indirect causation respectively. It is argued that the differences between these two verbs reflect not only a different worldview, but also speakers' intentions, which in turn highlights the complex relationship between cognitive models, lexical semantics and pragmatic contextual factors.
