In a study of misunderstandings between native and nonnative speakers of English, it was found that local repairs made up the basic conversational patterns between speakers. Although rare, nonlocal repairs were mostly unsuccesful. Postponement of requests for clarification proved to be the principal cause of conversational breakdowns.
