This research highlights a limitation of the cooperative principle, namely that it does not account for speakers' conflicting goals. Therefore, an extension to other levels of cooperation is deemed necessary. Also expressed is the belief that the cooperative principle underlies perlocutionary, perceptual and emphatic potential, and not only locutionary.
