The dual potential of repetition -for automaticity and creative variation- makes it a staple of conversational joking. In this contribution, the author focuses on (functions of) repetition in spontaneous joking, extending the analysis to a body of German conversation for purposes of contrastive linguistic and cross-cultural comparison.
