This paper deals with narrative inconsistencies in the Liongo national epic of the Swahili, a people inhabiting the East African coast and the adjacent islands. It examines whether previous explanations for narrative inconsistencies in epics can account for those found in the Liongo epic and attempts to provide more evidence of the universality of these inconsistencies.
