Curriculum documents in Australian schools foreground the role of language in education. It is stated that language is learned through use and varies according to the context. At the same time however the language system disappears from view. The author therefore encourages educators to engage students at all levels in an explicit focus on language, and how it works to mean, in order to develop high levels of literacy and a critical orientation.
