An analysis of indirect requests distinguishing conventional, semi-conventional and non-conventional forms. The authors account for contextual selection by analysing requests according to Goffman's schema for remedial interchanges. Two appendices are added: (i) an experiment on interrogative and requestive intonation; (ii) (by Carlo Arslan) experimental research on the understanding and the memorization of differently expressed requests.
