This qualitative and quantitative study is concerned with the pragmatics of refusal in adult native speakers' Mandarin Chinese, drawing on data collected by RCW and DCT. Twenty-two first order strategies are discerned, politeness being considered the highest principle. Finally child language development concerning refusal is examined.
