Annotation

It is shown that in Costa Rican Spanish non-active constructions such as the dative and the reflexive passive are used for the purpose of avoiding the attribution of blame to persons, involved in adverse situations. In addition to choice of case, the mentioning of agent, the choice of lexical items, and discourse strategies such as qualifying expressions are shown to accomplish the attribution of responsibility. Linguistic universals in blame avoidance are suggested.
