This article is concerned with contextual child (pre)linguistic activity and the step from gesture to speech. After discussing the initial 'communicative' capacity of the newborn infant, patterns of gameplay which adults and children establish at six months of age are analysed, followed by a discussion of the progressive substitution of gesture by speech.
