On restrictive attempts vis-a-vis non-English languages in New York State (1915, 1921) from the perspective of the New York City Yiddish dailies. It is demonstrated that although the main target of restrictive agitation and legislation may change from one historical context to another, the ultimate goal is consistently quite the same: to foster the hegemony of English speakers in American political life at the expense of newcomers.
