This article shows that, contrary to what Kaplan and Kleiber put forward, demonstrative noun phrases as used in natural language do not invariably lead to the expression of de re propositions. In fact they are opaque or incomplete deictic expressions, signalling that their referent is to be found via an element present in their context of use.
