Against the background of the current discussion on future language education policies in a unified Europe, the author takes the view that a qualitative change in foreign language teaching can only be achieved by a shift towards situations and procedures which mirror the contexts of natural language acquisition, applying this perspective to English L2-teaching and -acquisition at school in East Germany.
