The paper deals with conversational exchanges where the second speaker refuses to accept either entirely or partly a previous speech act accomplished by the first speaker. B. tries to describe (i) the rules according to which the challenging reply is constructed; (ii) how it is linguistically formulated, (iii) the variables which affect its degree of aggressiveness.
