This paper reports the results of two studies conducted to explore how discourse expectations affect the perceived coherence of a text. The analysis of excerpts from contemporary plays and spontaneous conversations reveals some properties that may affect coherence judgements as topic shift, comprehensibility, interestingness and realism.
