This paper discusses four major English language agencies in South Africa, which play a crucial role in the promotion and/or the protection of the English language: the English Academy of Southern Africa; the South African Council for English Education; the 1820 Foundation; and the Language Advisory Bureau of the South African Broadcasting Corporation.
