Annotation
The study of variation in many related fields, such as language change, sociolinguistics, the ethnography of speaking, and others, has been considered an important step away from linguistic frameworks accused of the nondynamic representation of linguistic systems and speech communities. The problem of (linguistic) homogeneity has been dealt with extensively and traced back to traditions as early as the Neogrammarians’. Especially Saussurean and Chomskyan models have been the targets of critical debate over the alleged abstract status of their theoretical objects, wholly ignoring diversity in the linguistic competences and behaviors of (any given set of) speakers.
