The article illustrates a dialogic (peopled and cultural) approach to signs by analysis of grounding phenomena in oral and written interaction - in private, educational and public settings. The argument leads to a theoretical perspective of communication where the dialectic between actual verbal interaction and its socio-historical embedding is itself seen as a grounding relation between foregrounded negotiation of meaning and backgrounded resources for meaning-making.
