Annotation

This paper demonstrates that the two English discourse markers, SO and ANYWAY, mark shifts of interactive frames – frames of human speech activities. I suggest that the discourse markers operate on this kind of socio-organizational level as well as discourse-organizational level. "Framing" is a notion which has been studied in a variety of disciplines including anthropology, sociology, psychology and linguistics over decades. However, in the 1990s, particularly since Tannen’s (1993) introduction of frames theory, its methodological approach and applications to studies of interactive discourse became conspicuous.
