Annotation
This article reassesses the function of the scribal technique called Wiederaufnahme or resumptive repetition, drawing from the field of conversation analysis. The conclusion is as follows: Wiederaufnahme is not necessarily a redactional technique to alert the reader where an insertion occurs. It is rather a technique which alerts the reader that the text will return to a previous topic after an interruption, whether that interruption was caused by a redactional insertion or simply the same author's change of topic. This function is consistent with the function of a common feature of everyday conversation to which Wiederaufnahme is closely related--that is, restarts. Before a discussion of Wiederaufnahme and its relationship to restarts, a brief review of previous studies on Wiederaufnahme demonstrates the need to reevaluate how this structure functions.
