Annotation

Bardovi-Harlig and Dörnyei (1998) found, in line with existing theories, that the pragmatic awareness of EFL learners lags behind their grammatical ability whereas ESL learners show the opposition direction. In this partial replication of the study mentioned above, an attempt was made to see whether the same pattern would emerge among different learner groups. The informants include 191 EFL pre-university students from China, 41 EFL/ESL graduate students from China studying in Singapore, and 40 ESL Singaporean speakers of English. Surprisingly, the results of the present study are just the opposite of the original study. That is, the EFL informants are more sensitive to pragmatic violations than the ESL informants and that learners' sensitivity to pragmatic violations seems to decrease as their English proficiency and length of stay in Singapore increase. Possible reasons for these results as well as theoretical/pedagogical implications are discussed.
