The first part of the paper discusses two different approaches on the notions of context, communication and meaning: Grice’s and Searle’s pragmatics versus socio-interactional discourse analysis, originated from Bateson’s and Goffman’s works and represented by Gumperz’s studies. The second part establishes the implications of theoretical and methodological divergence on the analysis of indeterminacy.
