This study aims to illuminate the social and metapragmatic functions of SUMIMASEN, a conventional expression of apology as well as gratitude, within the larger framework of public discourse in Japan. It is argued that this expression also functions as one of the ritualized formulae used in Japanese society to facilitate public face-to-face interaction.
