On the relationship between filled pauses (FPs) and discourse structure, both in terms of the speaker (production) as well as the listener (processing). Two questions are addressed: does discourse structure predict FP distribution and, conversely, does FP occurrence delimit topical units? A case is made for treating FPs as discourse markers in Dutch and the relevance of FPs to speech recognition applications is discussed.
