Three uses of the discourse marker WHATEVER are reported on, the focus being on the third use: list and labeling problems, the suspension of irresolvable argumentation and its speaker orientational use in "pseudo-argument", a conversation type simulating ordinary argumentation to preserve a sense of fairness and rationality in the absence of antagonists. Used as such, WHATEVER delimits "other-authored" positions and statements.
