This article examines the influence exerted by the usage of political terms (e.g. 'democracy') on ideological change. Do conceptually stable words restrain ideological change? Based on an empirical study of the Swedish ideological shift to the right, it is concluded that this influence is clearly limited in terms of its restraining power. Twelve usage fixation strategies are distinguished.
