Focusing on conundrums, a typology of linguistic triggers and so-called "similarity clines" is presented. A continuum of maximal similarity and dissimilarity of form distinguishes five stages (polysemy, homonymy, homophony, paraphony, and hahaphony), marking degrees of phonetic similarity between elements of bisociation in the linguistic trigger.
