It is argued that demonstrative as well as definite NPs can be employed in indirect associative reference, as is shown by a dynamic model of discourse reference production and reception. This model recognizes that the selection of referring expressions mirrors both diverging interlocutive interests as well as different representations of discourse interlocutors may have. Furthermore, the various discursive and communicative functions demonstrative associative NPs may have are surveyed.
