This article presents a model describing the following alternation and co-occurrence mechanisms of Japanese thanks (i.c. ARIGATOO) and apologies (i.c. SUMIMASEN): the applicability of alternation, the alternation and politeness, and the sequential preference of ARIGATOO and SUMIMASEN usage.
