This paper addresses the issue of the Cooperative Principle and, in particular, relevance. A so-called supermaxim of Global Relevance is described, which, like language, is embedded in specific social domains or events. Consequently, a more complete account of the Cooperative Principle is to be found at the interplay of a cognitive and a social theory of language use.
