An analysis of prosodic contextualization strategies in German reported dialogues. It is shown that in their reconstruction of past dialogues speakers simultaneously evaluate the discourse at hand by way of prosodic means, originally dubbed 'layering of voices' by Bakhtin, and redefined as 'polyphonic layering of voices' by the present author.
