The author warns against the dangers of stagnation - such as habit formation and conventionalization - as the academic discipline of linguistic pragmatics increasingly institutionalizes. Following a brief ideological critique of such basic pragmatic concepts as function, context, culture and the like, a case is made for avoiding further bureaucratization of the discipline.
