Following a historiographical sketch, the issue of mitigation is reanalyzed in a broad pragmatic framework by relating rhetorical and psychological approaches to interaction. Based on Italian doctor-patient and psychotherapeutic conversations, mitigator types and mitigation strategies are discussed in terms of their instrumental adequacy and psychological distance.
