A case is made for the re-evaluation of stylistic approaches to speech as a mode of action. Having observed that the construction of reference frames is a natural function of style and crucial to meaning interpretation of utterances in context, the author points the attention to the function of paradigmatic stylistic and rhetorical choices as figurative gestures in speech and writing.
