Annotation

This paper examines the paradox of the passive heroine in action-filled plots of popular romance novels, and more specifically, the stylistic strategies used to resolve this paradox. It is found that the strategies either upgrade the apparent activity of the main character, or downplay the actions of her opponents. Furthermore, the events of the plot are usually amplified by placing them in fictional contexts, like dreams or memories.
