Annotation

This paper criticizes the theoretical framework and application of critical discourse analysis (CDA) to texts. The 'reopened case study' refers to Flowerdew's CDA of a televised public meeting in Hong Kong, which is argued to undermine CDA's claim to disciplinary status, adopt manipulative practices, establish its own hegemony and feature moralizing tendencies.
