A pragma-rhetorical study of the Malthus-Ricardo controversy as a polemical dialogical exchange. Following a reconstruction of specific moves and countermoves in a sequential structure, recurrent argumentation patterns are examined. Epistemological conclusions on rationality and scientific progress are drawn.
