This article examines to what extent children use discourse markers to distinguish between levels of talk. Paired in best-friend dyads, four- and seven-year children interacted in two activity contexts: pretend play and story re-telling. It was found that activity contexts influenced uses of discourse markers. Also, children at both ages showed different activity contexts preferences and peer experiences. It is argued that these two findings are crucial to our understanding of developmental changes in marker usage.
