It is shown that the maternal use of affect-marked morphemes in Japanese mother-child conversations (i.c. -CHAU 'done completely') facilitates language socialization. The framework of language socialization proposed here yields new insights into the analysis of the acquisition of the aspectual suffix -CHAU.
