Annotation

This study argues for the contextualization of language acquisition research in terms of learner behavior and communicative style. Based on qualitative discourse analysis and the language socialization framework, English-speaking learners' anomalous uses of the Japanese affective discourse marker NE in their output of Japanese are analyzed. A case is made for the significant influence of affective and epistemic aspects of communication in the study of L2 learner production.
